Bakersfield, CA is located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. In 1862, floods destroyed the settlement that was originally founded 2-years prior by Christian Bohna. He was one of many people brought to the area by the California Gold Rush. In 1863, Thomas Baker moved to the Kern River area, which became known as Baker’s Field. Many travelers came through the area, quickly renaming it as Bakersfield. It became one of the fastest growing cities in CA during the 1970’s until 2010, growing 400%. The 2010 census noted Bakersfield as the 9th largest city in CA with its estimated population of 347,483. This city is at the center of the Bakersfield-Delano Metropolitan Area, which had a population of 839,631 in 2010. Today, Bakersfield is known for its varying industries that include oil, natural gas, aerospace, mining, petroleum, food processing, industrial fabrication, and distribution.
