The capital of Massachusetts is Boston, which had an estimated population of 636,000 in 2012, making it the largest city in the state. This city is at the center of the Greater Boston metropolitan area, where 4.5 million people live. It is one of the oldest cities in the U.S., founded by Puritan colonists from England in 1630. Several key points of American history happened in this city, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere’s “midnight ride” during the American Revolution, the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Siege of Boston, the first U.S. public school in 1635, and the first subway system in 1897. On April 15, 2013, during the famed Boston Marathon, the city suffered from two bombs that killed three people and injured hundreds. Sometimes the city is referred to as “The Athens of America” due to the many medical and education colleges in the area.  Boston’s economic base also includes finance,professional and business services, and government activities. The city has one of the highest costs of living in the U.S. and is ranked the 129th most expensive major cities in the world. However, it is still high on the world’s livability rankings, making it the 36th worldwide in quality of living in a 2011.
