Hartford was once the wealthiest city in the U.S. after the Civil War. The current state of the city is now starkly different, as it is one of the poorest regions in the nation. Since Hartford is so old, it contains a lot of history. It has the oldest public art museum, park, published newspaper, the second-oldest secondary school, and the Mark Twain House and Museum. Today, Hartford is known as the “Insurance Capital of the World,” due to its many insurance headquarters.
