On June 5, 1837, Houston was incorporated after being founded in 1836. The city was named after General Sam Houston, the commander during the Battle of San Jacinto and the president of the Republic of Texas.  It’s the largest city in the state of Texas and the fourth-largest in the US with a 2010 population of 2.1 million people. The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan has over 6 million people, making it the fifth-largest metro area in the United States. Houston’s economy is rich with energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation, health care industries and building oilfield equipment.
