Norfolk is located at the center of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, named for the large harbor of the same name located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It is considered to be the historic, cultural, and economic center of the region. Known for its history as a military point, Norfolk has the largest Navy base in the world. The city boasts copious miles of riverfront properties due to being bordered by multiple bodies of water. Norfolk is connected to neighboring towns by an elaborate network of tunnels, bridges, and highways. The city is the only location in the United States of America to use bridge-tunnels.
