Peoria is the largest city that sits on the Illinois River. Established in 1691 by French explorer Henri de Tonti, Peoria is the oldest European settlement in the state of Illinois. The area has deep roots in Native American culture. Artifacts and Native American burial mounds dating as far back as 10,000 BC have provided evidence that the region was occupied long before officially being named. Recognized for its reputation as an “All American City”, Peoria is known for having a thriving arts community and several tourist-attracting wineries.
