Meet the staff: Emily Spies

Emily Spies

Media Director

When did you start working at Matrix Media Services?

My first day at Matrix was October 5, 2002, and I can hardly believe it’s almost been a decade.

Where did you attend College and what was your major?

I graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a BA in Communications/Journalism and a minor in Spanish. Go Owls! Coincidently, that is when my owl obsession began.

Where did you call home as a child?

I grew up in Madison, which is a small town in northeast Ohio on Lake Erie, but in my family we just call it ‘The Lake.’ We still have my grandparents house, which is right on the water and right next door to my best friend’s parents. It was their dream home and it is my most favorite place on earth.

If you had to pick one out-of-home media to put your face on, what would you pick?

I’d probably go with a medium that is creative and eco-friendly, like chalk art or something that uses nature like a flowerscape.  However, I find hand painted wallscapes mesmerizing.  The artistry of that media is simply extraordinary — so maybe an abstract hand painted wall mural instead.  I tend to be indecisive when there are too many options. 🙂

What’s your office style?

Scarves are my favorite accessory. I have too many to count.

What’s your morning mantra?

I like to collect quotes so if I had a particular morning mantra, it’d probably be ever changing.  However, I do keep a copy of the Serenity Prayer in my desk.  It grounds me, and it also reminds me of my beautiful and wise mother.

If your house was on fire, what would you save first?

My puppy loves… Cairo, Scarlet and Bailey. Things are replaceable, but my dogs are precious.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Any beach will do is my usual response, but I’ve been dreaming of going back to Europe lately.

Coke or Pepsi?

Coke with lemon, never ever Pepsi.

Describe yourself in one word:

Kind

If a friend was calling off work and needed a good excuse, what would you suggest they use?

My dog ate a pound of coffee beans. This was my most recent excuse for calling off work and unfortunately for me and my dog, it was true. I would tell a friend to be honest – no need to fake sick. However, don’t play hooky when it’s busy and certainly never call off right after closing time at the bar. I’ve received a few of those calls through the years and it’s such a foolish decision.

What song is currently playing on your iPod?

Down in the Valley by The Head and The Heart, I’m obsessed with this song right now. They were just here in March and they were beyond AWESOME! I highly recommend them.

If someone wrote a biography of your life, what would the title be?

“Life’s a Beach, But Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen”
