Settled in 1786, Knoxville became the first capital of Tennessee. Though originally faced with difficulties expanding because of its geographic seclusion, Knoxville grew as a manufacturing city due to the instillation of railroads in the mid -1850’s and a post-Civil War population boom. In the 2010 census, Knoxville’s population was 178,874, making it the state’s third largest city. It is part of a larger Metropolitan Statistical Area, with a population of 848,350. Knoxville is one of the largest cities within the Appalachian area, acting as one of the entries into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
