Louisville is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the state’s only first-class city. The settlement that went on to become Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and is named after King Louis XVI of France, making Louisville one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains. While initial growth was slow, the arrival of the steamboat in the early 1800s sparked booming industrial development. The Louisville Combined Statistical Area has a population of 1,451,564. The Louisville metropolitan area is oftentimes referred to as Kentuckiana because it includes counties in Southern Indiana.  Louisville is famous for holding the Kentucky Derby, the first of the three annual races that make up the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. The city is also the home of the UPS Worldport Air Hub.
