Tiger Drives Aerial Advertising Awareness At Masters

The aerial banners flown above Tiger Woods as he teed off yesterday (4/8/10) at Augusta National are sure to increase business for aerial advertising.

There were two banners flown yesterday (photos below) and there are more to fly throughout the tournament.

Aerial banners (also known as banner tows) are often flown for three hours at a time, climbing to an estimated 200,000 impressions on a daily basis. Of course, not all campaigns are picked up by the media like the banners concerning Mr. Woods- but aerial banners are noticed, clearly evident by this stunt.

When purchasing aerial banners for an advertising campaign there are multiple factors that determine the cost per hour price point. The four main factors in determining space cost are:

  1. Market: Some markets are harder to reach than others and the necessary altitude for each market differs based on the terrain of the market. If a an aircraft isn’t currently stationed near the market of interest, costs will increase due to additional travel expenses.
  2. Availability/Special Events: If you are interested in advertising during a special market-wide event (like the Masters in Augusta, GA), the rates are going to be higher than advertising during off-days. Some markets also require higher rates for weekend campaigns.
  3. Contract Terms: As with most advertising, contracting for multiple campaigns, or campaigns with multiple air times can often put you in a position to negotiate a discounted cost.
  4. Production: Most aerial campaigns include the cost of a 32-character letter banner within the media space cost. Some markets allow the option of producing a custom banner to be flown in place of the letter banner but may require additional fees for insurance.
