Washington, DC was founded in 1791 and named in honor of George Washington. The city is commonly referred to as D.C., Washington, or “the District.” D.C. had an estimated population of 632,323 in 2012, the 25th most populous place in the United States. However, during the weekdays the population raises to more than one million due to the many commuters from the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Although it is not considered a state, it is the capital of the United States. All three branches of the federal government are housed in the district, including the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court. Many tourists come to the city’s National Mall to see the many monuments and museums.

Most large-scale events in the market are held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
