Dallas was founded in 1841, but formally assimilated as a city in 1856. As of 2010, the population of Dallas was 1,197,816, causing the city to be the ninth-largest in the US and the third-largest in TX. The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area had a population of 6,645,678 in 2012.  The city became historically noticed with its oil, cotton, and railroad influences. Today, the economy in Dallas is centered around banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, healthcare, medical research, transportation, and logistics. One of the largest and busiest airports in the world, Dallas/Fort Worth International helped Dallas become a strong inland port. The city of Dallas is ranked 14th in the world by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. It’s the only city in the South Central regional area to be recognized by the OECD.
