Mobile is the most populous city in Mobile County, the third most populous city in the state of Alabama, and the largest municipality on the Gulf Coast between New Orleans, Louisiana, and St. Petersburg, Florida. The Port of Mobile is the twelfth-largest port in the United States and had a significant role in the economic growth of the city, as it served as a key trading center between the French and Native Americans. Mobile is famous for having the oldest organized Carnival celebrations in the United States. The festival celebration began in the early 1800s, during the city’s French colonial period.
